Volunteers needed to keep the Peace (festival)
Volunteers are urgently needed to help organise next year’s Peace Festival in Leamington – or there may not be one! Committee members this year celebrated the event’s 30th anniversary – making it one of the UK’s longest running free festivals – but now there are only two people left to start preparing for the coming summer.
Festival director Trish Daly, who has been on the committee for eight years and also has a full-time job at Warwick Arts Centre, said: “It tends to go in circles. People are able to commit to a certain amount of time but after a number of years, they have other commitments.”
Opportunities include working in press and publicity, artwork design, marketing and organising children’s activities, workshops and working with campaigning groups. “The work ranges from booking toilets to dealing with bands, speaking to the press and designing the set. I started off organising the peace talks and have gone on to work in a number of other areas. That’s the beauty of it – you can get involved in all sorts of activities you’re interested in and discover new interests.”
Ms Daly added: “We are open to new suggestions – any ideas to make next year’s festival a bit different or better in some way are definitely welcome. “I am a big fan of festivals and this one particularly appealed to me because it’s free – it’s a great service to the community. You get such a buzz on the day.
“I shared my 30th birthday with the Peace Festival this year – it was the best celebration ever! It’s great fun and an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
“My message to people is, the festival is important to Leamington so help support it and don’t let it stop.” Next year’s festival will take place on June 13 and 14th 2009. Anyone interested in helping out should contact Ms Daly on 0845 3884207 or email info@peacefestival.org.uk
